UDZUNGWA MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK

Discover Exclusivity in Nature at Udzungwa Mountains

Situated in southern Tanzania, the Udzungwa Mountains National Park is a testament to exclusivity and natural beauty. This park is a sanctuary for wildlife enthusiasts, boasting diverse habitats ranging from tropical rainforests to grasslands and steppe. With over 400 bird species, thousands of plants, and six monkey species, including the rare Iringa red colobus and Sanje crested mangabey, Udzungwa proudly holds the second-largest biodiversity of any national park in Africa, offering an unparalleled experience for Tanzania Safari adventurers.

The Udzungwa Mountains teem with wildlife, harboring unique species like Abbott’s duiker, the elusive Kipunji, and the grey-faced sengi. Elephants roam the forests along the southern escarpment, adding to the park’s allure. Notably, the exclusive Iringa red colobus and Sanje crested mangabey monkeys are found solely in this region, with the latter remaining undiscovered by biologists until 1979.

Among the park’s success stories in conservation is the Kihansi spray toad, which faced extinction in 2009 due to habitat alteration but was successfully reintroduced after a dedicated captive breeding program. This achievement serves as a beacon of hope for wildlife conservation efforts.

For birdwatchers, Udzungwa Mountains National Park is a paradise. It boasts over 400 bird species, including the African marabou, Crowned eagle, and Ruppell’s vulture. Recent discoveries like the Francolin and Rufous-winged Sunbird add to the park’s allure, making it a must-visit destination for bird enthusiasts.

Udzungwa experiences most rainfall from November to March and during May, with mist and light rain common at higher elevations even in the dry season. Mild temperatures prevail at higher altitudes, offering visitors a pleasant climate. The best time to visit is from June to October, but avoiding the rainy season is advisable.

Accessing Udzungwa is convenient, with an approximate 6-hour drive from Dar Es Salaam. Traveling to nearby parks like Mikumi takes about 1.5 hours, while Ruaha is roughly a 6- to 7-hour drive from Udzungwa, offering seamless exploration opportunities for visitors.
